How to make Tin Can LuminariesTraditional luminaries are composed of the simplest of materials: a white or brown paper bag, a handful of sand, and a candle combine to form a simple lantern. This project offers a new take on this simple idea. I first did this as a craft project with my Cub Scout Pack. Cost almost nothing, effect. stunning! The boys made the luminaria in the afternoon. Just before campfire the Cubs were just finishing up a project while the leaders set out their lanterns. The Cubs were marched single file to the campfire pit. As the came out of a break in the forest they could see their luminarie set out in a serpentine pattern, creating a walkway. An audible gasp could be heard in the still winter night air. The Cubs will probably remember it all their lives. If you love the idea of luminaries, but worry about safety or would like a more permanent version, these un-canny luminaries are just the thing. These luminaries, unlike the traditional ones can be hung from porch, patio, or even trees or set along a forest path. The charm of traditional luminaries comes partly from the clever use of humble materials. Chances are you have got a cupboard stocked with canned goods. Serve up their contents, saving the cans as you go. When you have accumulated a half dozen or so, it is time to get started. Prepare for this project several days before you plan to use your tin lanterns. You need to allow a day to allow the water-filled cans to freeze solid. Don't try skipping this step. It is nearly impossible to punch holes into an empty can. The ice supports the can as you pound into it and gives you something to pound into as well. The designs you will punch into the cans should be simple and geometric, at least until you become accustomed to the process. You may want to thoroughly dry the outside of the can and use a marker to outline your design: the spray paint you will apply later will cover the marker lines. It is really easy, though, to "eyeball" it: make four equally spaced punches around the middle of the can, connect the "dots" with more punches to make a zigzag line, etc. The ridges in the can be used as measuring points as well. This is a great winter project on those days that you pine for summer. These luminaries will add a festive touch to your next summer party. With temperatures below freezing, it is hard to believe that summer is just around the corner and will be here before you know it. With different motifs and a can each of orange and black spray paint, you will enjoy making more luminaries for Halloween. Pass the apple juice please.
