Luminary / Luminaria

Torches and luminarie are unique in the added touch that can make an event special or even magical. I first heard of the idea from my Mom who lived in Sterling, Illinois a small prairie town near the Mississippi. About thirty years ago they started as a community effort to line along down their walk and across the sidewalk. Everybody would go out and light them at six and put them out at ten during the Christmas season. The look was spectacular. Last year when I was there the local Chamber of Commerce had taken it on and improved the idea and also line one of the major thoroughfares. (The one that goes out of town to Wal-Mart) Maybe I am just getting old or cold but I did have goose bumps. Aren't small towns great? Originally they used white paper bags but now they recycle used milk jugs. Bleached white kraft is no longer politically correct but I still have a few thousand white bags myself.

Instructions with photos of how to make Tin Can Luminaries

This is a special project. Charming and functional copper luminaries. are a little more sophisticated than many of the others that are linked to here but well worth considering. These will be a permanant addition to your outdoor lifestyle. In the buggy times the regular candle can be replaced with citronella candles.

Who would have thought of making Luminary Peppers? What else can you do when the garden bursts forth with more than you can eat and the original luminary is a pumpkin after all!

These Centrepiece Luminaries Will look great on your dining room table or out on the patio.

Home and Garden Television keeps coming back to luminaries over and over. They must be popular or something. A twist on brown bag Halloween luminaries is quite nice. The page also includes some Halloween dinner party ideas. Luminaries and six other uses for recycling used milk jugs

Lumière Festival, Ottawa

Ottawa Lumiere Festival

On August 28th at 6pm, New Edinburgh's Stanley Park came to life with a carnival of light. The inaugural Lumière Festival organized by the Crichton Cultural Community Centre was a free event that will appeal to families, seniors and young people who want to take part in a magical evening.

Organizer Joanne Hughes experienced a similar festival in British Columbia and fell in love with the idea: "It was like nothing I had ever experienced before. The whole community came out and directly participated by bringing their own lanterns. It was beautiful to see on many levels. I knew we had to have one in Ottawa."

Plan to visit the event in 2005, it is worth the trip to Ottawa.

Make an Ice Luminary and Snow Lumens

When it is winter what better to do than making Ice Luminaries. This page has two different methods with excellent pictures. Don't forget to try with coloured water for a great effect.

Another method of making Ice Luminaries.

This is sort of nice. Snow Lumens and Ice Candles. This page offers winter outdoor activities that you can do with the kids.
