I first heard of the idea from my Mom who lived in Sterling, Illinois a small prairie town near the Mississippi. About thirty years ago they started as a community effort to line along down their walk and across the sidewalk. Everybody would go out and light them at six and put them out at ten during the Christmas season. The look was spectacular. Last year when I was there the local Chamber of Commerce had taken it on and improved the idea and also line one of the major thoroughfares.
